Morton was looking for a competitor to a promising but complex technology called “magnetic bubble memory.” In a brainstorming session that has since become legendary, lasting no more than thirty minutes, the two men sketched out the fundamental principles of a new device on a chalkboard. Their invention was not initially conceived as an imaging sensor, but as a novel form of electronic memory. Their idea was brilliantly simple, elegant, and powerful. They called it a “Charge 'Bubble' Device,” a name that would soon evolve into the more formal Charge-Coupled Device. While the CCD was busy revolutionizing Astronomy, another, slower revolution was brewing back on Earth. As fabrication techniques improved, the cost of producing CCD sensors plummeted, and their resolution and quality soared. The once-exotic technology began to find its way into consumer products. CMOS technology is the bedrock of the modern digital world; it's the process used to make microprocessors, memory chips, and virtually every other type of integrated circuit. Using this same standard process to create an image sensor had obvious and enormous advantages:

  • Cost: Because they could be made on the same production lines as other computer chips, CMOS sensors were significantly cheaper to manufacture than the specialized, boutique process required for high-quality CCDs.
  • Power Consumption: CMOS sensors consume dramatically less power than CCDs, a critical factor for battery-powered devices.
  • Integration: The CMOS process allows other electronic circuits—such as timing logic, analog-to-digital converters, and signal processors—to be integrated directly onto the same chip as the light-sensing pixels. This creates a “system-on-a-chip,” a compact, all-in-one imaging solution.

For years, CMOS sensors had been plagued by higher noise and lower image quality compared to CCDs. But relentless innovation throughout the 1990s and 2000s, much of it spearheaded by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, steadily closed the quality gap. By the mid-2000s, CMOS sensors were “good enough” for the biggest and most demanding new market: the Mobile Phone. For a smartphone, where space, cost, and battery life are paramount, the highly integrated, low-power CMOS sensor was the perfect fit. The CCD, with its need for multiple support chips and higher power draw, simply couldn't compete in this new arena.
