Direct Current flows in one direction and at a constant voltage. When transmitted over distance, it suffers from significant power loss due to the resistance of the wires. To maintain a usable voltage, Edison’s power plants had to be located within a mile or so of their customers. His model for electrifying the world was a patchwork of thousands of small, localized power stations, one for every neighborhood. It was a robust but profoundly limited vision, incapable of spanning the vast distances of a continent.

While Edison was building his DC empire, a different vision was being forged in the mind of a brilliant and eccentric Serbian-American inventor, Nikola Tesla. Tesla envisioned a world powered by Alternating Current (AC), a form of electricity that rhythmically reverses its direction, flowing back and forth. On its own, this property was not a decisive advantage. But AC had a secret weapon, a piece of technology that made it vastly superior for widespread distribution: the Transformer. A transformer is a deceptively simple device, typically two coils of wire wrapped around an iron core, that can change the voltage of an AC current with astonishing efficiency. By “stepping up” the voltage to extremely high levels (hundreds of thousands of volts), electricity could be sent over thin wires for hundreds of miles with minimal power loss. Edison, his DC empire threatened, launched a vicious public relations campaign to brand AC as a dangerous, deadly technology. His associates publicly electrocuted stray animals using AC to demonstrate its supposed dangers and even promoted its use in the newly invented electric chair to forever associate it with death. The decisive battle of the war was fought not with words, but with water. An international commission was formed to determine how to harness the immense power of Niagara Falls. Edison’s DC system was proposed, but it would have required transmitting the power over impractically thick and expensive copper cables. The commission took a gamble on the future and, in 1893, awarded the contract to Westinghouse and Tesla's AC system. Engineers built the largest hydroelectric power station the world had ever seen. On November 16, 1896, operators at the Niagara Falls Adams Power Plant closed a switch, and for the first time, massive amounts of power were transmitted over long distance, traveling 22 miles to the city of Buffalo. The industries of Buffalo hummed to life, powered by the distant, thundering falls. It was a spectacular vindication of AC technology. The war was effectively over. The model was simple: build ever-larger and more efficient power plants, connect them with a web of high-voltage transmission lines, and sell the power to a rapidly growing population.

Across North America and Europe, a process of consolidation began. Small, independent utilities that had sprung up in towns and cities were bought up and absorbed into larger regional companies. Competing systems with different voltages and frequencies—a chaotic legacy of the grid's infancy—were gradually standardized. In North America, 60 Hertz (cycles per second) became the norm, while Europe and other parts of the world settled on 50 Hertz.
